The Highway Code Rule 243 quoted above is NOT law, just good practise and therefore a rule. If the Local Authority or Highways Agency place yellow or red lines at a junction to enhance this rule it then becomes a law or regulation and can then be enforced. Should a vehicle to parked in such a position within 10 metres of junction and is considered to be in a 'dangerous position' or 'causing an unnecessary obstruction', the vehicle can be dealt with appropriately as it will then be committing an offence. Hope that clarifies the situation.

Rule 243 of the Highway Code is explanatory to Regulation 103 of The Road Vehicles (Construction and Use) Regulations 1986 which states:

"103. No person in charge of a motor vehicle or trailer shall cause or permit the vehicle to stand on a road so as to cause any unnecessary obstruction of the road."

Therefore although the 10 metre rule does not appear in statute, judges will use it to interpret Regulation 103 and therefore you will get nicked.

So does that mean all rules in the Highway Code are guidelines, and not law? So how does the guidelines apply to zigzags, no parking waiting loading? But yet there are bust stops at zigzags where the zig zags have been shortened to accommodate the the bus stops, this endangering the pedestrians crossing the road, obstructing their view of traffic from left or right! No law is above safety of pedestrians! Not even TFL, you and me would get Pcn for even waiting 7 seconds? Because it’s a pedestrian crossing?

Parking at a corner is normally not within 10 metres. Is is different on a bus route ? I have been told it may be 15 metres.

I haven’t seen this enforced anywhere. Maybe it is easier for police to stand behind speed cameras than have to get out of there cars and check things like this out.

On a crossroads with traffic lights, where on the radius does the meausurement start from.

Along with parking on the pavement and parking facing oncoming traffic at night this is yet another case of the authorities can't be bothered. What is the point of writing these things in the Highway code? None. I think.

I have never heard of anyone being fined or even warned about this. Do as you wish people. Nothing will happen to you.

Check 137 Southport Road in Lydiate. They park right on the junction there. God help you trying to leave thevMoorings or the Fieldings.

I know the police are busy but surely pcso's could enforce bad/dangerous parking at junctions.

This problem is country-wide, caused by an increase of inconsiderate morons on our roads and useless, inept authorities that can't be bothered to prosecute the drongo's.

Here's a good one for you! Large transit sized van parked on the pavement outside our house, so we cannot see to get out of our drive without pulling full car into the road where we have lots of farm machinery and tractors constantly back and forth.Also we live within the 10 metres of a junction Rang Northern Gas Networks who own the van to be told the driver's wife is in labour !! What?? is she in the van?? So all you fellas out there , park where you want if your wife's in labour!! Parked there at 4.00pm Tuesday and still there at 11.00 am wednesday, and for the record, he parks on the pavement just up the road from here EVERY weekend FOR THE WHOLE WEEKEND so not sure what any of this has to do with parking in front of our house. Had my moan , now waiting for him to appear!!

Green Lane a road that runs off the main Hamstead Road I. Birmingham has a cut out section at the junction to allow the number 16 buses to turn here. Where would this 10 metre rule apply from the actual give way markings at the junction or where the pavement commences following the turning curve ?
